Something we are very passionate about at Beautiful Unique is sustainable fashion. This is how our Then & Now Collection came into existence.
We were absolutely shocked when we started looking at the impact textiles and fashion have on our environment. Here are just a few of the very scary statistics:
Only 1% of clothing is recycled. Nearly 87% of all clothing ends up incinerated or in landfill.
It takes 2,700 litres of fresh water just to make ONE cotton T-shirt, that is enough drinking water for one person for 2 and a half years!!
Laundering synthetic clothing accounts to 35% of the primary microplastics released in to the environment, that's 700,000 microplastic fibres per load of synthetic clothes that could end up in the food chain!
Fast fashion is one of the main reasons for this, mass production, low prices and high sale volumes.
We decided that we could try and help reduce this by sourcing preloved wedding dresses that had seen better days, deconstructing them and using as much of them as possible to create gorgeous new bridal items, saving them going to landfill and letting them start a new adventure as part of someone else's big day!
